out! A Public Consultation on Government Guidelines on Climate Change Issues (French) |
Scientific experts have confirmed the reality of climate change. But above and beyond theories and forecasts, societies need to act to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their vulnerability to climate change. Fighting the changes requires immediate concerted action from all actors in society. This has been well understood by Québec!
Québec has resolved to fight climate change and is among the leading states in the word in this field. Québec has an excellent GHG emission record, due in large part to its massive investments in clean, hydroelectric energy.
The Government of Québec is currently putting the finishing touches on its strategy for adapting to climate change and its 2013-2020 Climate Change Action Plan, which will include measures both for reducing GHG and for adapting to change. In order to reach its GHG emission reduction target of 20% below 1990 levels by 2020, Québec continues to move forward and implement a framework that fosters the development of renewable energy and new technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Since January 1, 2012, Québec also has a functioning GHG cap-and-trade system, and is clearly a central player in the Green Revolution.
Québec will be building on the advancements it achieved through its 2006-2012 Climate Change Action Plan. By implementing that plan, Québec took a strong leadership position in the field of sustainable development in North America, acquiring the means to significantly reduce its GHG emission below 1990 levels. In addition, it has moved forward with complementary, sector-specific initiatives designed to support its goal of becoming a world leader and model in this field.
Since the fight against climate change involves the entire planet, governments throughout the world can make a difference by working together. The Government of Québec has chosen to act, and is committed to contributing to the worldwide effort aimed at reducing GHG emissions. As such, it has either membership or observer status in numerous organizations and partnerships.
