Press ReleaseStricter GHG light vehicle emission standards announced for the United States and Canada a victory for québec and federated states Québec, April 1, 2010. – Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks Line Beauchamp is thrilled at today’s announcement by the U.S. federal government in regard to the adoption of stricter greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards over the entire territory of the United States, and the Canadian government’s intention to follow suit. Today’s decision by Washington to impose vehicle and light truck CO2
emission standards is predicted to lead to reductions comparable to those
planned in regulations adopted by the State of California, which set the
strictest standards in North America. California announced its intention to
recognize automobile manufacturers’ vehicles that comply with federal norms
as meeting its own regulations, starting with model year 2012. In the view of the minister, recent events have again demonstrated the influence of Federated States in national and international GHG emission reduction policy-making: “The agreement between California and Washington and the announced intention of the Canadian government to follow suit proves that Federated States and regional governments play an essential role in the fight against climate change, due to their abilities and action taken in many fields.” Québec is open to cooperation similar to that displayed between California and Washington, as long as the Canadian government adopts, following consultations on its draft regulation, standards that will achieve the same GHG emission reduction results as set for the United States. Currently, the Canadian regulatory process still remains at the consultation stage. Following the lead of California and other states, Québec continues to apply its own regulatory framework in order to reduce light vehicle GHG emissions starting with model year 2010. - 30 - SOURCE:
