Freshwater covers 10% of the territory of Québec. With 4,500 rivers and
half a million lakes, Québec holds 3% of Earth’s renewable freshwater
reserves, and 40% of all this water is concentrated in the St. Lawrence
River watershed!
This is a great privilege, and it comes with the great responsibility of
doing our best to preserve this collective wealth. Québec’s National
Assembly unanimously adopted the Act to affirm the Collective Nature of
Water Resources and Provide for Increased Water Resource Protection on
June 11, 2009. This law confirms that water resources are part of our common
heritage and that the State is duty-bound to act as their custodian, for the
benefit of current and future generations.
