Agricultural EnvironmentTo consult an HTML version of this menu section From a sustainable development perspective, promoting a balance between agricultural development, its social acceptability, and environmental protection for the benefit of future generations is an excellent means of conserving resources like water and soil. Québec’s regulatory approach with regard to the environment in agricultural areas is based on rigorous phosphorous management at each farm, since other elements that can alter the quality of watercourses are often linked to phosphorous loss. In this regard, the Agricultural Operations Regulation (REA) aims, among other things, to strike a better balance between fertilizer applications and plant requirements. It also aims to ensure adequate management of livestock waste with a view to reducing the environmental impact of its use as fertilizer. This section summarizes the environmental standards in force in agriculture. It also specifies which operators are required to complete a phosphorous report and the activities for which it is necessary to obtain an authorization certificate or submit a project notice. In addition, it presents information on MDDEP’s different areas of regulatory and nonregulatory intervention in agricultural areas and best practices for environmental protection. |
